Calendar:
February 18, 2010 Ted Faye will return to give a talk about the Weird Tales of Death Valley. Did you know that some people say that there are caves beneath Death Valley filled with gold? Ted Faye has a long history of documenting his fascination with Death Valley. We last heard his talk about the 20 Mule Team.
March 18, 2010 Fred Ward, graduate gemologist and author of The Fred Ward Gem Book Series, with give a talk on Phenomenal Gems: Gems that Do Tricks. Come share our fascination with the gems that display special characteristics—not the ones that lie on velvet looking beautiful because of trace elements and pigment, but the largely indistinct category, phenomenal gems, the gems that appear to do tricks. Optical “tricks” are based on the physics of light and materials. The way light moves through gems determines the patterns we see dancing before our eyes. It is as if the wonders of the world were compressed into each tiny, splendid object. How can anyone resist appreciating the quintessence of nature that may have taken millions of years to produce and thousands of people diving from fleets of ships or moving mountains to obtain?
April 15, 2010 Silent Auction. Come and bid on the most remarkable material around. No one can say exactly what all will be here as members (and guests) bring things in for all to bid on. We will have a selection of rough rock, geodes, slabs, some plants (one of our members raises stag horn ferns and brought two last time--will he bring one again?? unknown until that night). Janie has been known to bring her pies or some other baked goodies, which are highly sought after.
